Police publicly shame looters caught robbing hurricane victims

As Hurricane evacuees fled their homes and businesses in Florida, looters saw dozens of easy targets. What they didn’t plan for were the police officers who stayed behind.

The Miami Police Department started publicly mocking and shaming looters on Facebook before escorting them to jail. “Thinking about looting? Ask these guys how that turned out. #stayindoors” the police department wrote on Facebook before sharing the picture below.

Miami wasn’t the only city to ridicule the looting scum.

Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Rick Maglione called the concept of stealing shoes during a hurricane a “fairly bad life choice” in a Facebook post encouraging everyone to stay safe after his officers arrested 9 looters at a local pawn shop.

According to local NBC affiliate WTHR 13, the Fort Lauderdale Police Departmetn has arrested more than 20 people for burglarly in the hours after Irma. The FLPD used Twitter to show everyone what happens to looters in their city.

Their barbs were on par with Miami. “You just won a pair of chrome bracelets,” they wrote under one looter’s mugshot. “See you in court.”

Do you think criminals should be subjected to public ridicule more often?
